For some pools, you will earn BMCs from different levels. You can earn from three different levels. You first level consists of 8 different members. Then your members will start filling up your second level. This is why you do not have to do any referring, especially if you start under someone who is rapidly referring new members. Then your second level will start to build. The second level can hold up to 64 members and your third can consist of up to 512 members. Imagine earning a BMC off of that many members!
However, if you were noticable of the chart I displayed earlier, those levels only allowed you to earn BMCs from your first two levels. That is ok, because once you have achieved the gold position you can level up and earn even more money off of all of your levels! Here is a chart to demonstrate this:
